Emergency Care
Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but occasional issues can arise during treatment. At A Smile by Design, our goal is to help you understand what requires immediate attention and what can be managed safely until your next appointment.
If you are ever unsure, our team is always available to guide you.
What Is Considered an Orthodontic Emergency?
Most orthodontic concerns are minor and can wait for a scheduled visit. However, you should contact our office promptly if you experience:
- Significant facial swelling
- Trauma to the teeth or jaw
- Severe pain that does not improve
- Bleeding that does not stop
If you experience dental trauma such as a knocked-out or fractured tooth, contact your general dentist first. Once the tooth has been evaluated, we can assess any impact on your orthodontic appliances.
Common Orthodontic Issues and What to Do
Many common appliance problems can be temporarily managed at home until we see you.
Loose Bracket or Band
If a bracket becomes loose but is not causing discomfort, leave it in place and contact our office to schedule a repair.
Poking Wire
Use orthodontic wax to cover the area causing irritation. If necessary, a clean pencil eraser may be used gently to move the wire away from the cheek.
General Soreness After Adjustments
Mild discomfort is normal after adjustments. Soft foods and over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen can help during the first few days.
Broken or Damaged Appliance
Call our office during regular hours so we can determine whether an earlier visit is needed.
After-Hours Concerns
If an urgent issue arises outside of office hours and the patient is in significant discomfort, please follow the emergency instructions provided by our office. Most orthodontic issues can be managed temporarily until we are able to see you.
Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies
You can reduce the likelihood of emergencies by:
- Avoiding hard, sticky, or chewy foods
- Wearing a mouthguard during sports
- Following appliance instructions carefully
- Maintaining good oral hygiene
- Protecting your appliances helps keep treatment on schedule.
